I want to be more than a single mom with nothing, but I want to be a single mom with something to fall back on, and something for my kids. They depend on me and it's my job to take care of them, To make sure that they get the education that they need, get the jobs they need, so they they can one day help raise their families. Have you ever though of moving to North Dakota. There you can get a house with $0 down payment, no credit check, just take over the payment of the house an average of $800.00 a month. It is an idea until you can get your feet out of the mud.

I am also a single mother and I struggle with the same issue.  We have enough money to buy what we need, but we do not always have enough to buy what we want.  When a trip to the movie theatre, museum, or aquarium are out of the question, we head to the library.  I have found that my local library has wonderful programs for children, especially during the summer.  They have scientific demonstrations, magicians, book clubs, knitting, and yoga.  The list really goes on and on.  Doing simple things like this gives me time to save up the money to do something big.  For a cheap treat, we like to visit Rita's WaterIce or the Philly Soft Pretzel store.  You get a lot for your money when you go there.  We have also found a local pizza shop that has jumbo slices of pizza for 99 cents!  It's within walking distance from a friend's house, so walking there with friends make the pizza taste even better.  Check out your local YMCA as well.  They offer free memberships for those who qualify.  They have great programs for kids and adults, plus a they offer a place to swim.  There's a lot out there to do, you just have to do the research.  If I find any more info, I'll let you know.  By the way, what an awesome job.  I wish I knew how to maintain my own car!

I am also a single mother and I was able to attend my local community college using grants and scholarships.  When it came time to move on to a four-year institution, I was again able to attend using government grants and a small amount in student loans.  Now that I am in graduate school, I must get by solely on student loans, but I have been lucky enough to receive a very expensive education for a relatively small amount of money--compared to what some people must pay.

Your first step is to apply to your local community college.  They have financial adviors who will be able to help you.  In the mean time, try this website: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.  It is a government website that determines your eligibility for government funding for a higher education.  They make the determination based on your yearly income and monthly expenses.  This information is then sent to the college where you have applied.  Your school will then handle the rest once you have registered for classes.  Just make sure that you list the community college you have applied to when you are filling out the FAFSA.  Good Luck!

Get on a housing waiting list. Call and set up an appointment if you hae medicaid for children they will provide transportation to this appointment. There is a program called  WORK FIRST/Benefit Diversion at your DSS. It gives you a lump sum to get on your feet or a montly allowance tfor 3 months to get on your feet. Secondly, call and make an appointment to the child support office, again if you have madicaid they will provide transportation to this appointment. YMCA/YWCA always has a mothers morning out program and it gives needy women a daycare 8-1pm and 4-7pm for free if you have medicaid for the children. That will give you enough time to look and secure a job. Then if you have to go to the health dept for vacc. for your son if you have medicaid they will provide transportation for that visit. If you don't have medicaid call DSS they will mail you a packet and a return envelope. DSS/Medicaid/Public housing and the bus/public transit will help you till you get on your feet. Call DSS also for daycare vouchers or gov assistance for daycare. BEEN THERE DONE THAT SWEETY< YOU CAN DO IT TOO!

Have you thought of going to a community college ? They have many services that might be of help . Some also have support groups that you could belong to so that you could network ideas to support your daughter and yourself. I know our local college has a woman's support group. Maybe your local community college would have something like this. It is worth a try to make an appointment with a career counselor to see what they may have for you.

Im doing everything I can for my two girls. I want them to have the best life just as they were in a normal family with mom and dad and a descent income.  I just purchased a car with my tax return hoping that it would service us but being a single mother and no male help or expert advice I bought a lemon.  I'm just asking if anyone knows of a place that is reasonable and wont take advantage because I am a woman, or a nonprofit organization that give cars freely.  We have been bussing it for some time and forced to walk up to two mile on a regular basis. and that is unfair for my 4 and 5 year old.  We are low income and receive Gov. help but it is not enough. I am hoping to get on my feet in the next 1-2 years.  I appreciate any support, perferably a woman expert.

A lot of times all you have to do is go down to your local community college (if you want to go back to school) talk with the financial advisor about going back to school.  The financial advisor will give you a whole packet of forms to fill out, asking for your last years tax return, paycheck stubs, etc... (this should be easy if you worked last year, take your last paycheck stub and that is your yearly wages (assuming you worked only one job).  You can apply for minority scholarship, pell grants, disability grants and on and on.  There are some colleges you can work on campus to pay for your college.  You trade hours for credits.  There is also different programs at colleges.  Check to see if your local trade school have programs where they pay for your college and you work a certain time usually broken up into 2-4 years to re-pay the cost of education. 

If you are looking into homes and down payments.....

I am currently in that same boat....  I am thinking the best bet is a hud house.  Some of the locations of some of these houses are not in that bad of an area.  If you are even given the slighest oppertunity to own a house, live in it a few to five years and then move.  All you are really needing to show is that you are consistantly paying on time every time.  Yes there will be trouble times, but be up front and honest with your mortgage people.  THey are willing to work with you, but you have to let them know if you run into problems.

Unfortunately when you are looking for grant information it is going to take some work - period!

I am a single mother of 3 boys ages 10, 4 and 1 in Tennessee. I am living with my mother because when I was pregnant with my 3rd son my husband became addicted to hardcore drugs and I had to make him leave. He since has not straightened up his act. He does not pay child support and I cannot go through the neccessary actions to make him pay child support or get a divorce because I have no means of transportation. I need out of my mother's house.  She can no longer afford us. I cannot go to work because I cannot afford a car or childcare. I have tried to get help from the state but they offer very little and they want you to jump thru several hoops which I am unable to do due to not having transportation. I had a vehicle up untill about 8mths ago and right before the front end went out on it I was pulled over for "looking suspicious" whatever that means and it was brought to my attention that I have been driving without a liscense for 8yrs. I went to court over this and explained to the judge that I have to be able to drive because I am a single mother of 3 small children and I have to be able to get back and forth to job, childcare, doctors visits, store and ect. I begged him for a hardship liscense and he would not do it so now I run the risk if I do drive again of going to jail and having my children taken away from me. It is going to cost several hundreds of dollars to get my liscense back and then I have to carry sr22 insurance for 5yrs or it will be suspended again. I cannot afford this. I cannot afford anything. I have to depend on others for even just simple basics like soap, diapers, medicine...whatever. My youngest son is 6mths overdue on his vaccinations because I have been unable to find a way to get him to the doctor's office. We have not been able to leave the house at all. At least my mother has a yard where the kids can go out and play but that is the most we ever get to do. My life is such a mess and it went downhill so quickly. I never pictured myself like this. Hello there, I am a single mother with 4 children. 3 girls and one boy. I value my family. The only thing is a never have enough money to go places with them. I would love to take them to eduactional sights, amusement parks, recreational family activities, and camping. I could go on and on. I strugle everyday just hoping that someday i will become someone in a career. THis way I can spend time with my children.I work full-time at wal-mart as a Technician. I change oil and tires. I can't wait to show my kids this expierence so they to can keep thier vehicle in good shape. One of the best places you can go for grants is http://www.hud.gov . There is a tremendous amount of information about grants there. Almost all of the grants you are eligible for are handled by your local community development offices. They are the ones that will help you find and apply for grants. One of the things that you should know is that the government has a website. They have to make the information known about their government grant programs and they have to make that information freely accessible to the public - which means that they have both a website and you can find printed information about the government grant programs in the libraries. Besides looking at the government grant programs I highly suggest that you look into the other non-government entities that have adoption-related funding programs. As they are not part of the government grant programs they will be a little harder to find but they are out there.
Grant Basics 101

I'm a 26yr. old single mother, Foster Parent, and a college student looking for any information about Free Gov. Grants that assist in buying a home for single mothers and or Foster homes. Recently I took in a little boy but was unable to take in his little sister, my modest little two bedroom home just wasn't big enough and the two were split for almost a full year. Unfortunately this happens all the time. Which is why I'd like to find a Free Gov. Grant or a sponsor to help me buy a house big enough to take in not just one child, but their siblings too. In my years as a Foster Parent many, many times I've seen siblings split up due to home placements that just couldn't accommodate the needs of children in the states custody. Many of us Foster Parent take in as many children as allowed, but if our homes are just not big enough then the children needing placement will be split up and in most cases put into homes in other counties. This makes for a very unhappy child and it makes it harder for the Foster Parent`s to create a loving and safe environment for the child. How are we supposed to explain that being separated is for the best...when clearly it is not. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Most recently in my area 1000 coats were donated to area kids. Now I know that my area isn't the only area that has this kind of program. These kinds of programs do exist. But they don't have the same names and some of them are available in only certain areas. Since you have access to a computer you should check online for these organizations. Not all of them have websites which means you will also have to do some offline checking as well.

Whenever I search the links that I find for grants they lead me to people who want you to pay for that information and a couple of them lead to the so called surveys. I have not found one link that would offer such information without a cost.

Knucklehead, you don’t have to pay in order to find information about government grants. Current information about all available programs and grant opportunities is published right here on aidpage.com and it is absolutely free. Soon we will be adding information about many private sources as well. What you need to do is to make a research and find out if there is a program providing assistance in the area that you are interested in. Once you identify the programs (most likely they will be more than one), read carefully the documents and pay special attention to the eligibility requirements. Unfortunately, in almost all of the cases the text is rather complicated and highly bureaucratic, but reading it might be worthy. If you are eligible for a certain program, next step is to prepare a pre-application and send it to the listed address. If you need assistance with the pre-application you may find useful the wizard that is included in Federal Money Retriever. The software is not free, but you can download it and use it free for 31 days. This time is more than enough to prepare the document and to decide if it will work for you.
